Carbon black electrical conductivity - a new, old secret

Although the usefulness of carbon black electrical conductivity is now starting to gain more widespread recognition, its usefulness as a conductor in general was recognized many years ago by the motor industry. As well as lending its colour to tyres, carbon black also helps to improve their performance. Being conductive, it helps to draw away the heat inevitably caused when the rubber hits the road. It thus helps to cool both the belt area and the tyre tread. This not only increases the useful life of the tyre but also improves safety. In short, the tread is the part of the car which literally grips the road. Anything which reduces the speed at which it degrades, helps to improve the safety of the car. It is for this reason that, even today, the single, biggest use of carbon black is in tyres.
