Carbon black electrical conductivity - it's all on the surface

Carbon black electrical conductivity is the result of carbon black's surface-to-volume ratio. This is very high, much higher than that of soot. As a result of this it reacts very quickly to stimuli such as the presence of electricity. This is because a greater proportion of the material is exposed to the stimulus. Granulated sugar, for example, dissolves in hot liquid much more quickly than a sugar cube does.
