Graphite In Batteries

Graphite in batteries - a new use for an old industrial favourite

The list of uses for graphite is extensive. For centuries it has been indispensable for teaching children how to write. Later it found a multitude of industrial uses, most notably as a lubricant. Over recent years the growing market in mobile phones, smartphones and tablets, has led to staggering growth in the use of graphite in batteries. Put quite simply, big screens need big batteries to power them, particularly if they are going to be touched and pinched and swiped all day. For practical purposes this currently means lithium ion or lithium polymer batteries, in which graphite is a key component.
