Carbon Blacks

Carbon blacks - a modern piece of history

Because carbon blacks are so valuable in modern manufacturing, it may be tempting to think of them as a modern discovery. Nothing could be further from the truth, they were in use in ancient China and classical Egypt as a basis for high-quality black inks. The invention of the Gutenberg Press in the mid 15th century created a new source of demand as mass-publishing finally became a reality. Even today, the paperless society is still some way off. Of course, as time has passed, the usefulness of this material has become more widely recognized and its applications in industry have therefore become more widespread and diverse.
